When Matt McKay resigned as the coach at Boone Grove after the 2015-16 season, he thought it was for good.
Honestly, he did.
“There was no doubt I needed a break,” McKay said Friday. “It was a pretty emotional time. I’d been doing it a long time, the span of a quarter of a century. (My son) Ian was graduating. I was saying goodbye to a number of kids I’d been around since they were in kindergarten. I needed a sabbatical.”
One year later, the sabbatical is over. Pending school board approval, McKay will return as Wolves coach with Bryan Hill, last year’s head coach, remaining as varsity assistant or as McKay phrased it, associate head coach.
“When you walk in those school doors day after day, it’s kind of a calling,” McKay said. “It’s been my entire professional life. Being a (physical education) teacher, I’m in that gym every single day. I see almost all the kids who play at one time or another. It didn’t take me too long to realize.”
