Boys Varsity Baseball · Bothwell named to All-State Team & Times Co-POY

Several local players were named to the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association’s All-State teams.

Outfielder Carson Husmann (South Central) was selected in Class A. Teammate Kyle Schmack earned honorable mention.

Pitcher Ty Bothwell of state champion Boone Grove and shortstop Logan Ryan (Hebron) were selected in Class 2A.

Pitcher Michael Doolin and outfielder Clay Thompson of state champion Andrean plus third baseman Sam Beier (Wheeler) were 3A selections.

Austin Peterson (Chesterton), Ryan Bolda (Crown Point), Brock Cooper (Hobart) and Justin Graves (Lake Central) were 4A honorable mention selections.

Pitching aces Doolin, Bothwell named Times Co-Player of The Year

It had been a few years since they’d first met as up-and-coming pitchers in the Hammond Chiefs travel ball program — one on the 13-year old team, the other on the 14-year old team — a long enough time that Andrean’s Michael Doolin and Boone Grove’s Ty Bothwell didn’t immediately remember each other.

“I saw him on his unofficial visit to IU (last fall),” said Bothwell, a freshman with the Hoosiers. “There was this big kid. I was talking with him and I asked him, ‘What’s your name?’ He said, ‘Mike Doolin.’ I was like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me? Where did this come from? He definitely wasn’t this tall before.’ I was watching videos of him and it was insane. When did he become a beast?”

At 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, Doolin is an imposing presence on the hill and a night-and-day contrast in stature to the 5-8, 160-pound Bothwell.

 For their physical differences (Doolin is also right-handed and Bothwell left-handed), the pair have plenty in common: a pitching coach, Jim Nohos; a burning desire to win; and the ability to get hitters out. That package helped them to a combined 21 wins, state championships in their respective classes and Co-Times Player of the Year honors…
