Girls Varsity Volleyball · Five is Fine as the Wolves Take Down Rival Bearcats

Heading into one of the biggest matches of the fall season, the Lady Wolves Varsity Volleyball Team took on the Wheeler Bearcats. Boone Grove vs. Wheeler games are always substantial games. Any rivalry game is a big deal, especially if your school is victorious; it provides bragging rights. Additionally, winning amps up next year’s game, bringing out the competitive sides in each opposing schools. Previously stated in the last article from an interview with Matt Bien, “If you can’t get excited about Wheeler, you can’t get excited about anything.”

At the start of the first match, it was a close back and forth battle. Boone took the lead for the whole game; Wheeler trailed close behind. The Wolves kept their spirits up and took the first set with a score of 25-20.

There was a tough, tight battle to put points on the scoreboard during the second set. Wheeler fought back and lead with the majority of plays ending at the net. The Wolves struggled to get their offense going and had all their kills dug and returned to end the second set 17-25. The Wolves and Bearcats were tied on sets, 1-1, going into game 3.

Wheeler worked up 21 points, leaving Boone Grove far behind. The Wolves came back to 17 points and Wheeler worryingly called a timeout. A missed serve for the Wolves put the score at 20-25, heading into match 4.

Boone Grove put their lost matches aside while Sydney Dixon kept the kills rolling. The game stayed close; Boone made a great play off a Dixon pancake dig that changed the momentum of the set. After a long volley, the Wolves snuck a tip over the net to reach the score 23-17, Wolves. Boone Grove knew they weren’t going to lose this rivalry game; they battled to win in the fourth match 26-24. To take the match to a decisive fifth set.

As the student section stood up and chanted, “What’s a bearcat?” the Wolves went to work. The serves were acing and the hits were killed. Boone Grove deposited points and wouldn’t stop fighting until they had the biggest win of the season defeating Wheeler 15-9 to take the fifth set and the match.
