The Boone Grove Wolves guys basketball team took on the Lions of Victory Christian Tuesday night for their home opener. The home opener has traditionally been a stumbling point for the Wolves as they have opened with 4A and region power Valparaiso, leading to the Wolves dropping every home opener since the 2001 season. With a new opponent came a new sense of optimism and when the final buzzer sounded in John F. Hinkey gymnasium, the drought was over and the Wolves began the season with a 56-49 victory, paced by Johnny Parker leading way with 13 points. The Wolves also had two more players in double-digit scoring, Erik Buth and Quinn Walker with 11 and 10 respectively.
Boone head coach Matt McKay was happy with his team defensive performance saying “Defensively I thought we played really well, keeping a team under 50 points is generally a pretty good recipe for victory”. With three players in double digits is was a team win “The whole team played pretty well and so it was a total team victory”. The crowd in the gymnasium was very electric and excitement filled the air as the state champion guys baseball team was recognized at halftime.“The crowd was really good, lots of enthusiasm”. Junior guard Johnny Parker says “ The key to winning the game was staying calm and not forcing shots, boxing out and controlling the pace of the game. The most important part was staying calm in pressure situations”.
The Wolves come back to the hardwood on Tuesday, November, 27th at home vs the Hobart Brickies.
